I have many students who struggle to read in their native language, whether it be English or Spanish. My current collection has books that are too difficult for some of my students to read and enjoy. I believe that graphic novels are an excellent way to encourage kids to read books, not only for enjoyment but to improve their reading skills.
I have selected graphic novels that will appeal to both boys and girls in middle school. I have selected books in both English and Spanish so that kids can be successful in both languages they speak.
Reading graphic novels can help reach reluctant readers. Graphic novels appeal to kids who struggle with reading, but also kids who don't like reading. Many kids who are capable of reading, may prefer gaming or watching YouTube, but they can be pulled into a story by the visual elements of graphic novels.
I hope that by adding new graphic novels to the library, I can encourage all of my students to read for pleasure.
