I will be using the iPads purchased through this project to create a digital listening center. Students will scan QR codes using an app to automatically load books onto the device that correspond with the units we are studying in class, as well as holidays and special times of the year. Not only will this provide convenience when choosing a book, this technology will allow my students on all reading levels to enjoy hearing a story beyond our daily read aloud. Most recordings of books have fun sound effects, music, and more than one narrator, which makes it fun and motivating for young children. Using digital QR codes allows me to give my students more options when selecting books, and not just what I have available on tape or CD.
Hearing a book read on tape helps students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way.
Digital books helps students focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give them an important introduction to listening — a skill that they must master in order to learn to read.
