I teach in a very low socio-economical area just outside of Washington, D.C. My students face many challenges of daily life including wondering where their next meal will come from. On top of that, many of them are SEVERELY below grade level and struggle with reading. Reading is ESSENTIAL to learning! My students love coming to school and are excited to learn, until it comes time to read. Several students are frustrated and embarrassed because they KNOW they cannot read. They try their best to hide it. I do my best to make them feel successful and ensure them I will do ALL I can do to help them learn this essential skill. My students are caring, trusting, and eager children who are so grateful for anything they are given, even if it just a special pencil, as many of them have so little to begin with.
