I and the two other English I teachers at my school will be using "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" for our next novel unit. Our students will have the opportunity to read the entire book and explore the themes that are prevalent throughout it. We chose this book because it has many themes and events that are directly relatable to young adults, and we believe it will capture their attention and open their eyes to new perspectives.
Although our students may not always understand the importance of reading, books like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" are essential. These books allow students to make personal connections with the characters in the books with whom they share similar experiences. Real world connections such as these are necessary for student engagement. Thus, we continually seek to provide our students with engaging texts such as "The Perks of Being a Wallflower".
