I am transitioning my classroom of five years to a more station-based, student-engaged learning environment. The stations that I use are going to incorporate "reading zones", technology centers with iPads and Laptops, as well as hands on project centers. Students in my classes enjoy learning about West Virginia history because I create a story based setting where they can really immerse themselves into the setting I try to set. I believe that providing a comfortable learning environment with choices in the classroom will help them focus on the task at hand - getting excited about history!
When students are relaxed, they become ready to learn. This is something that many students have explained to me over the past few years. I was reluctant at first because I was unwilling to give up the amount of control necessary to make flexible seating successful. However, I believe it is important for educators to adapt and listen to the needs of their students. The bean bag chairs and the rockers will provide a comfortable reading center as well as a place for students to take the technology available to go and work on the hands-on technology projects I plan on designing.
I am requesting the Elite Bean Bag Chairs and the video rocker chairs to use as one of the five stations that I will establish in my classroom. These items will help me provide a reading.individual work area that will be unique to many of my students who have been forced to sit in rows of desks throughout grade school. The bag of refillable beans will be beneficial in maintaining the bean bag chairs so students can use these great resources for years to come.
