I teach at a rural high school located in a high poverty area. My students come from all walks of life and many different types of situations. Our school is fairly new and we are celebrating our tenth year this year!
As a new school it was decided that students will be given the opportunity to take classes not normally offered in our part of the state, including dance, in order to give them one more reason to stay in school. Many of my students have never taken dance. Their only glimpse of the arts is limited to what they see on TV.
In the past six years, since I have been teaching, our dance program has grown from 14 dance students to well over 60 students a semester.
My goal as a dance teacher is to impact my students so that when they leave my classroom they have a better respect for themselves, their peers, and their world. We spend a great deal of time developing their creative voice and how to use situations in their everyday life to create unique dance studies.
