The students in my middle school are as different as the community from which they come. Northern California is known for its strong technological community and diverse food choices, but there are areas in the region that are also notorious for their extreme violence. The students at my middle school have experienced many different aspects to the region and more: some will enter middle school with English as a secondary language, others will enter their first mainstreamed English classroom instead of a separated class for high-need students. All of these students, though, share one thing in common: they want to stand out in their large classrooms (the average size is in the high 30s) and be successful as they enter into high school and on into their educational careers.
