Last year, several girls requested that we start a softball team and even went as far as getting 35 students to sign-up before we were even able to organize it. Two of our staff members coached these girls during our Beacon after school program. One coach is a teacher and our boys varsity basketball coach and the other is one of social workers and a graduate of our high school. The students, guided by these inspirational adults, saw something very special happen. They worked tirelessly practicing in our local neighborhood parks and played a couple scheduled scrimmages with other clubs and teams in the neighborhood. Despite having, limited places to practice, having to fight for space, they attended practice day after day, rain or shine, and felt like a real team. All they talked about was being real student athletes. Grades and commitment to school started to improve and their self-advocacy to have a real team the next year.
