My goal is to provide a chic venue within the library where students can perform and share their gifts with the rest of the school population. This coffee maker and supplies will help replicate the atmosphere of a coffee house. The spinning wheel of choices will be used to select random prize winners during scheduled performances.
The library performance cafe is a place dedicated to student voice and choice. I have purchased cafe style tables and seating so that everyone has a great view of the performance area. There is a piano that students can learn on or hone existing skills. We have presented performance events dedicated to various holidays and hosted teachers that wanted an alternative setting during class presentations.
Being able to offer hot drinks during these shows would really accentuate the cafe vibe. When there are no scheduled events, students can hang out at the café tables, charge their devices, and decompress with a comforting hot beverage.
I am amazed at the levels of creativity that I have seen in my students. We have a garage band, spoken word artists, writers, and musicians. Seeing all of the talent around me made me want to build a safe, relaxing space where my students can raise their voices and let their lights shine. The library café provides the students with an outlet where they can safely express themselves through poetry, music, dance and other art forms. The Keurig coffee maker and spinning wheel will help me to kick it up a notch.
