My students live in the rural south and experience a beautiful scenic view of the mountains from their seats in the classroom everyday. The population of our school is about 300 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The community is very small with little industry to keep the economy thriving. Therefore, many parents are unemployed or underemployed. The community is not very diverse which calls for an increased need of global awareness. The lack of income becomes a lack of media exposure in the home and, in turn, limits each student's ability to compete academically with their peers even in the same county.
