My students are the best. We are at a school that is 75% free/reduced lunch in an urban setting. The kids are always hesitant to start reading music because some of my students are still mastering basic reading skills. However, by teaching them music theory they can all start from the same place and grow together as a group. It is an excellent way to build teamwork and cooperation in the music classroom. Our school has a population of about 600 students. We have roughly 1/3 of the school enrolled in a music performance group. We hope to grow this number every year.
