I am requesting several items that will help prepare a calming corner for my students that have special needs. Due to their disabilities, unlike their general education peers they are unable to calm themselves. This corner will be put in place in order to give them an area they can go to calm when needed.
My classroom services lower elementary grade levels, throughout the day and there are times that many are sent to my room when they need to have a break. This will allow me to give them the break they need in a specified area, while not disrupting the other students that I am working with.
The bean bag chairs and soft shag rug will offer them flexible seating that is comfortable and calming. The autistic LED light, the bubble tube, and the cube will help the students with autism. These students are susceptible to mood changes due to lighting. Lighting with soft colors, like blue will help students to relax, be creative, and calm down over reactive students. The light cube with the accessory kit, buttons, and blocks will help engage those who struggle with processing. Lastly, the mitt will be used for students who require sensory stimulation.
It is important to have tools they need in order to be successful. All of these items will be placed in a "calming corner" and will be utilized daily. This will allow them to be successful in a place that is a constant source of stability. Despite their circumstances and disability, this "cozy corner" will help my students be successful.
