My school and county are committed to increasing literacy this year. Our school working as a team to help our students learn to build vocabulary, increase comprehension and hopefully build a love of reading. Each day students read for 20 minutes at the beginning of one class. On Monday, Language Arts, on Tuesday it's Math, etc. Well, on Friday it is Science. This is where I come in. By the time students come to me on Friday, they sometimes get bogged down with the "do we have to do DEAR (drop everything and read) time today?" attitude.
I wanted to find something different to engage and entertain my students. I decided to offer them the choice to read by themselves or we could read a book together. To my delight, they decided we would read together. Last year, we read Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life and they loved it! I only had one copy, so I read it to them which became difficult because there are so many wonderful illustrations in the book that make the story so entertaining. After taking their comprehension test, they were rewarded by watching the movie. This was a great incentive for them.
I would like to do the same thing this year, but I really need a classroom set so they can all follow along and see the illustrations more easily. I also found the book, Wonder, that is a wonderful book I think would be a great book for middle schoolers. I hope you will consider helping my students by donating towards the purchase of these books. Thank you!
