There are so many benefits to reading! Reading helps alleviate depression symptoms, reduce stress, build our vocabulary, increase our ability to empathize with others. Reading also exercises our brains AND helps prepare us for sleep. The list goes on and on.
How can we not want our students to reap the benefits of READING!?
This list of books is incredibly diverse. I want to provide my students with a classroom library that reflects who they are and touches upon the issues that some of them are dealing with.
Let's face it...I know 9th graders are reluctant to read. They are busy with friends, sports, and their phones. Many have said, "I don't like to read." However, I believe that with independent reading time during class, and the RIGHT selection of books, the solution is here. When they tell me they don't like to read, I can turn to them and say, "You haven't found the right book," and then direct their attention to the shelves of our classroom library -where the right book awaits them.
