I would like to provide a better learning environment by having standing desks in my classroom. I have a class of 35+ sixth graders with a wide variety of social, emotional, and academic needs. Students have to focus for longer periods of time at this grade level (up to 90 minutes per block), and staying engaged is difficult. Giving them the opportunity to move helps them stay inspired and motivated to learn.
Students at this age are making individual choices and learning independence, thus giving them a seating choice is an opportunity for them to choose their best path for learning. Sitting for long periods of time is difficult for anyone, and I hope giving students an alternative to the traditional desk will help their attention and motivation, which leads to academic success!
