Not all students have the same backgrounds or opportunities. Our school is predominately minority and 100% of the school is on a free breakfast and lunch program. I have 21+ students this year. My students have many obstacles to hurdle to become avid readers and learners. Our Goal is to have the highest achieving students in our county.
I want to close the achievement gap starting with Kindergarten. Kindergarten is the foundation were students learn to read, write, comprehend, apply knowledge, foster a love of reading and build the necessary skills that students need to become successful learners. This year I will use Daily 5 in my classroom. My students will be reading with self, reading with someone, working on writing, and doing word work while I confer with students in small group.
Although I have been building a library of good-fit books on the students reading level, my class does not have the variety or adequate quantity of on-level independent reading books for each student.
