My students are 4 year olds. They often come to school with little or no exposure to books at home. Our school has guest readers come into the classroom, I read to them several times throughout the day, More students that are exposed to books and reading, the more important reading becomes and the better readers the students become. They love to have stories read to them and this gives them one more way to experience this.
