"Oh, I get it now!", is the most joyous phrase that a teacher can hear: the elusive, "Ah-Ha!" moment. I hope this year will be filled with a renewed sense of engagement and discovery that will be facilitated while using an Elmo Visual Display camera. With large class sizes across the district, teachers need new instructional and motivational strategies to reach all students.
An Elmo camera will help to scaffold direct instruction to meet various needs and learning styles. First and foremost, an Elmo camera will reduce language barriers by providing a visual to accompany oral directions. Secondly, math and reading skills will improve. I can display each step of 3-4 digit multiplication and division problems. We will be able to determine errors in math caused by simple place value mistakes. Writing structure (and handwriting) will improve as well as we revise and edit authentic writing samples.
Using the Elmo document camera is a motivator for some because we can showcase their work, which also can serve as an inspiration to other students! When students are able to share their own ideas to solve real world problems, they not only learn from teaching others, they also improve their presentation skills. This is extremely helpful for the entire class as well as the individual student. Not to mention, I may learn a thing or two from my learners!
