I teach 9th grade in a low income, urban district in Connecticut where there is a great focus on the 9th grade transition to ensure that all freshmen are put on the path toward completing high school in 4 years. Ninth grade is a rough year for many students because they have much more autonomy and must start to navigate the demands of high school and being a teenager. There is a learning curve for students as they begin to figure out who they are and how they fit into high school and eventually determine who they want to become.
As a teacher, I strive to provide a welcoming, comfortable environment for my students, especially because they are freshmen and are new to Maloney. This involves building strong relationships with my students and providing them with the support and materials they need to be successful.
