Our school serves over 1100 elementary students in Brooklyn, and over 700 of those kids are currently eligible to receive ESL (English as a Second Language) services. These kids manage the ordinary stresses of growing up in public schools plus the added stress of developing written and oral fluency in a language they don't speak at home. In addition to the academic stress, the students are also burdened by poverty. Over 90% of our kids are eligible for free lunch. We are a school in need, but our kids couldn't be brighter.
