We need snacks (and books)! My students will tell you 鈥淚 don鈥檛 read.鈥 But they do eat, and they like comics and memes. In order for them to have voice and agency In the world, they need to see how reading broadens their horizons, and connects us to each other. This is harder to do when we are in a virtual environment. (I鈥檝e done what I can: I鈥檝e driven to kids鈥 homes to drop off books, I鈥檝e sent books through the mail, and I鈥檝e sent letters and notes of encouragement home to my kids. I need more envelopes, stamps, and snacks to reward their grit and perseverance.
Through the mail, I鈥檇 like to give my students more diverse books, and more graphic novels, to get them connected to reading. Then I鈥檇 like to celebrate their accomplishments with a small snack. Never underestimate the power of a good book (and a sweet or salty snack!)
