My district is a progressive district in suburban New York, which in the last 3 years has focused on student-centered learning and educating the whole child. We do not focus on test scores, but on students as people, and want to educate them as such. We strive to keep students WANTING to learn, instead of just to memorize facts that they will be tested on. Many of my students face adversity in their personal lives which keeps them from being 100% mentally present in class. My school has been putting a lot of work into creating a positive, school spirited culture and students have responded well to this energy, but they are still not fully engaged in lessons. They are always very excited when one gets a new iPhone or new technology. Unfortunately, my school does not have the resources to provide every classroom with the ideal equipment for teaching this generation.
