The students in my class are some of the hardest working kids I know. Not only are many of them first generation immigrants from Mexico, but they are amazingly kind and generous to each other and their families. They help younger students, translate for their own parents, and many of them are learning English for the first time themselves. Our school, a K-8 charter school in Southern California, focuses on the needs of our population adjusting our instructional programs as needed. These children have shown an amazing improvement over the past few years and continue to make encouraging gains in their academics. Our children have many struggles in their own lives that can interfere with their learning, but have proved to be amazingly resilient in the classroom.
