My students are reluctant readers. Many of them struggle with reading and comprehension, so they won't rush out to get the latest novel. When they do experience success with reading, they are so excited. Some of them even say that they had never read an entire book until they got to my class. Many of them leave wanting to read more.
My school is on the south side of Chicago. Most students don't have a safe route to the nearest library, and my school does not have one currently. I have been attempting to build my own library for the past few years, so that all students have something they can read and experience success with. Since my school is college prep, we work tirelessly freshman year to raise students' reading levels. Without a library, this has been challenging. Last year and this year, we had 100% acceptance into college.
My students want to learn; they want to read! Please help me in my endeavor to give all students the advantages and opportunities they deserve. Thank you.
