Unfortunately, my students are consumed by stress and hardships in their life. At times, they come to school with much more than grades on their mind. Often, things out of their control; including poverty, family issues, mental health issues and behavioral challenges, interfere with their day and their ability to express themselves in a positive and calm way.
The challenges my students are handed are often too intense for young teens to make sense of, making it difficult for them to trust and form relationships in school.
I want to create a learning environment that encourages stress relieve through creativity and not only fosters academic success, but also fosters their academic and social success. I want to continue to create an environment in which they feel safe to express themselves, ask for help when they are in need and allow them to silently vent through creativity.
The students in my class are all unique. They each have vast differences in academic, social and behavioral needs. Yet, I have seen them come together and treat each other kindly when they have a creative activity to do together. My students get excited when they are given a chance to be a kid again and do the activities they wish they could be doing instead of babysitting, cleaning, listening to arguing or sleeping on a hard bed.
The materials that I am requesting will be used to help students take breaks in order to help settle their minds. They will be able to make cards and gifts for others; to learn how good it feels to give and appreciate the people who help them. They will be able to build and color through their difficult thoughts, all while remaining in a class they have begun to feel safe.
