Over the past year at my school, I have focused on introducing mindfulness and calming techniques to my students. This has primarily been done in small groups or when I am able to do classroom lessons. However, this year my goal is to expand upon those techniques and host a weekly yoga class during lunch. By starting a lunchtime "yoga club," I will be able to host 10-15 students from each grade level during all 5 of our lunch slots, potentially reaching up to 75 students each week!
Teaching basic yoga techniques to my students will help instill them with a sense of calm throughout the day, as well as giving them strategies for coping with difficult situations in their environments. I will open the class up to those who want a chance to practice yoga during lunch, as well as to students who struggle with self-regulation and appropriate behavior and who can take the class as an alternative to detention or other punishment-oriented consequences.
As a counselor, one of my goals is to teach my students appropriate coping strategies and behavior management techniques in a positive way. A yoga class will help meet both those goals with the added benefit of keeping my students physically fit! To accomplish this goal, I am in need of 10-15 yoga mats for my students to use.
Please consider donating yoga mats to this cause!
Thank you!
