What I love about my students and what makes them special is that they are extremely diverse in several aspects of life. Ethnically, 67.3% of my students come from Hispanic or Latino backgrounds. Socioeconomically, 76.5% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Lastly, my students are a variety of types of learners, from English Language Learners to learners with disabilities. Students are constantly hanging out in my classroom, before/after school, during brunch/lunch, and even during passing period when they should be getting to class.
I strive to create an intentional positive safe space that is welcoming to and well-equipped for all students, even those that may not actually have me as a teacher. Many students have been receptive to my efforts by being open and honest with me about their lives and my teaching practice.
