Although the school library provides abundant choices in reading texts, the power of a classroom library is inexplicable. We begin class with book of choice reading every day. Since students are reading different books at different paces, it is difficult to reserve the library at just the right time. Additionally, access to a classroom library with engaging and diverse options allows students to "shop" for that "just right" book.
Much like my previous project endeavor, I am focusing on the need to obtain high-interest reads for the BOYS in my classroom. While I've begun building my classroom library, this project allows others to help put books in student hands. It is common to receive 10th graders who are completely uninterested in reading. This is especially true of boys! Unfortunately, it is often because they either do not have access or are not provided the opportunity to read in class. Cultivating lifelong readers is vital to their success; the change begins with books!
