The majority of my students are immigrants from Spanish- speaking countries such as Mexico, Ecuador, and Guatemala. Most of the students are currently struggling academically and are significantly behind their English-native speaking peers in the ELA mainstream classroom. Even though English language learners (ELLs) may be conversationally fluent, writing and reading appear to be the most challenging areas for them.
Our elementary school has 376 students. Of those 376 students, 12% speak English as a second language, 67% have free or reduced lunch, and the school is among lowest performing 20% of schools in the state. If these students are not given the opportunity to improve their language skills, they are at greater risk of falling further behind and are more likely to drop out of school in the future.
