When I think about my students, social emotional learning always comes to mind. Many of the children are coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. The most important thing is for them to receive the support to thrive in emotional development and well being. We all can agree that first a child has to be emotionally well before they can engage in learning.
Not only do my students experience the hardship associated with being low income, they now have a whole new circumstance to contend with—distance learning. They are dealing with all of their norms being uprooted and experiencing a lot of change.
My project consists of mostly books that will support their social emotional health along with some resources for mindfulness and yoga. Read alouds are a great way to engage children in a story that is relatable to them while teaching lessons to help them navigate these trying times. In addition, I want to give my student a mindfulness skill set so they can manage their stress and anxiety. I plan to engage them in read alouds, yoga, breathing techniques, and follow up activities for the stories we are reading. One of my primary concerns is to help them manage their emotions and stress during this time.
The goal is to get the children to be the best learners they can possibly be. To do that, this social emotional learning is crucial. During these times of uncertainty, I hope we can come together and support the students who need our help. I thank each and every one of you for your support.
