Students in my school live in a growing suburb right next to Denver. Gentrification in the city has moved many low-income families to this neighborhood. More than three-fourths of our families qualify for food assistance through the federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. English is a second language for a majority of our students. Many are undocumented and have family members who are undocumented as well.
Despite, or because of, their challenges, our students are exceedingly resilient. Still, a path to college should be as obtainable for them as it is for any other student in our country.
