Adding these wonderful new "wobble" chairs in my classroom will be especially beneficial for those students who need movement, even while studying and during productive work periods. They will benefit the rest of the students too because they will add alternative, fun, new seating choices and CHOICE is a big thing for kids.
When students are happy with their chosen seat, they are more comfortable, focused, ready and willing to engage in the lessons.
Sitting in the same chair, or even same type of chair, everyday can get uncomfortable, boring, even exhausting. When we're not comfortable, we can not really fully focus on the subject or task.
In our classroom we change seats several times throughout the day. If I have not called for a change in awhile and someone needs it, they simply ask. I set the guidelines at the beginning of the year and have not had any issues with complaints even when I say they will have to wait until the next subject or assignment. Students know they will get a chance to switch. These simple choices have made a difference in work ethics and attitudes. If by chance two students arrive for the last seat of its kind I have seen students Ro-Sham-Bo (rock, paper, scissors), for it or just offer it to the other student saying "You can have it I'll just get it another time." I have even seen both offer it to each other so they end up doing Ro-Sham-Bo to see who "has" to take it now. I hope the new options will bring even more camaraderie, focus and learning.
