My students want others to know that though they may not always read and comprehend written materials they are adept at using technology to gain access to information. Computers would give them access to teaching videos that would explain concepts and ideas, since dyslexia interferes with their ability to understand print. At the middle school level students are expected to read, understand and complete assignments. Possession of the iPads will facilitate the use of apps that will scan text, and read it out loud for the students. This resource empowers the students because it gives them the same advantage as their non disabled peers.
Access to the iPads also offers the student the opportunity to find books they can read that are suitable for their level and beyond. The student will be able to hear material read at even higher levels, should they so desire, resulting in accelerated learning. Being able to read at their current reading level fosters growth and excitement for reading.
Students will be able to take the iPads home to use, since it is in the everyday work world that the true learning takes place. They will be able to checkout the iPad to complete assignments, develop their reading and comprehension skills, and apply their learning, thus making it real.
