My students are enthusiastic learners, however they are sometimes limited by their sensory needs. Students who have sensory needs may be over or under-sensitive to sounds, smells, textures, or the brightness of lights. They may need to rock, spin, bounce, crash, or receive "deep pressure" in order to meet a variety of sensory needs.
When my students display sensory-seeking behaviors, they are not able to focus on tasks, communicate their needs, cope with challenging situations, or interact appropriately with peers and teachers.
Creating a sensory-safe zone will help my students regulate their sensory needs in a safe environment. This zone will be loaded with the tools necessary to allow for visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive (crashing), and vestibular (spinning) input in order for students to normalize their sensory needs. After meeting their sensory needs, students will be able to return to the classroom more composed and ready to learn. Our school currently does not have a Sensory room, and these materials will be used in building a sensory room for my students, as well as other students in the school who have sensory needs.
