I teach at a high poverty school on the south side of Chicago. My school is 7-12th grade, I teach Environmental Science to gifted 7th graders and AP Environmental Science to 11th and 12th graders.
It is so rewarding to watch as kids make connections between what we study in class and their own lives and neighborhoods. We study and discuss the detrimental impacts we are seeing in neighborhoods, and why environmental science is so crucial to their lives as citizens of the city of Chicago! Oftentimes I need lab materials and advanced technology in order to allow them to interact with the material we're learning about. I spend a lot of time on hands on and inquiry driven lab activities, supported by a lot of student driven data analysis and discussion.
