I have 28 amazing students in an urban elementary school of about 600 students. We have 82% of our students on free or reduced lunch prices, school wide. There are six different home languages represented in my classroom. My students arrive at school each day with many challenges. Most live in crowded apartments with large families, many care for younger siblings and serve as the family's English speaker. Despite the challenges that these 9 and 10 year olds face, they arrive at school each day smiling, laughing and ready to learn. They are rising to high expectations. They work hard, ask genuine questions, justify their thinking, work well with peers and challenge themselves.
