Reading Workshop is the best part of my fifth grade students' day. They love having choices about what they read. They are amazing thinkers who apply what they learn in their mini lessons to the quality literature in my classroom library. However, my classroom library doesn't match the diversity of the children who enter. They are diverse in many ways, including race, religion and special needs.
All students have the right to books with characters that look and sound like they do. They deserve to see their struggles, hopes and dreams mirrored in the literature they read. Reading books with stories that mirror their lives will only enrich their worlds and create engaged readers. We need books written by authors whose lives also mirror my students'. Having students who read more will help improve test scores and overall academic progress.
