My students are in first grade, some have special needs and some do not. They come from a low-sociol economic community. Some have 10 children living in one apartment, some have one parent, some have two, some are on welfare. Their living environment is not exactly ideal. However they all come to school with expectations that maybe where they are for 6 hours a day will help their future. They are all eager to learn to read and write, and they all deserve to have the opportunity to do this. First grade is one of the most important grades. These children already come to school with less language and background knowledge than students who come from a better environment, however, they are still expected to read and write on the same level as every other child in New York. They deserve all the materials to help them have the opportunity to excel as much as they can.
