12th grade students are often overworked, stressed out, and completely overwhelmed their senior year. With college and career on the horizon, there is little time for connecting. I would like to change this in my classroom by creating a coffee house environment that blends with our daily literature class.
I foresee students getting to class early, making a mug of coffee and settling in to their part of the classroom, totally relaxed and ready to learn. In addition, to really add to the feel, as they enter I will be playing coffeehouse music from YouTube. Not only will this be an inviting way for students to come into the room, but I believe it will foster more emotional buy-in to the course. Studies show that when students truly feel like their teacher cares about them, they will work harder. Providing a warm cup of coffee is like getting a hug in a mug. It also will help with some of the biggest issues in senior courses - showing up late to class, apathy towards the course, and sleeping during class. I really hope you can be a part of making this happen for us! Thank you!
