I teach second grade in a rural school in the Four Corners area. My students bring me joy and hope each and every day with the kindness they show toward one another and the creative ways in which they go about solving problems and understanding new concepts. Compared to the rest of our district, the school where I teach has the highest number of students with traumatic backgrounds, with special needs (physical, mental, social/emotional), on free/reduced lunch, and with the lowest reading and math scores. But I also argue that we have the highest number of students who persevere, respect one another and adults, are curious about the world around them, and have the biggest hearts. The students at my school and in my classroom amaze me every day.
