Our school is a high achieving school in a middle class neighborhood, so it is easy to assume that all of our students are strong readers and have access to books outside of school, but for many of our students this is not the case. We have a growing population of at-risk readers. These students are identified as reading below grade level and are placed in designated reading classes to help move them up to the level of their peers. Students in these reading classes are continuously reading choice books, a practice that is proven to increase reading ability and test scores. Because many of these students come from economically disadvantaged families, the books that these students read must be provided at the school library.
