I teach various visual art courses at a diverse public high school in an urban center. Most of the students have had some art or music in elementary school, but many of them have had very little experience in these types of classes before entering our school. As co-chair of the fine arts department, my goal is to help create a diverse range of arts programming in visual arts as well as music, dance and theater in order to provide students with as much experience in these disciplines before they leave high school. For many students it may be the only fine arts class(es) they take, so it is vital that we as arts teachers help students express themselves and develop an appreciation for cultural and creative expression.
