My students are using math and science to work on real world problems and solutions. One group will recreate the NASA space wrench that was the first 3D printer emailed file sent to the International Space Station, then determine and print other needs (tools or otherwise) that could be filled by a 3D printer when humans decide to colonize Mars, where a local hardware store doesn't exist. Another group will be working on small scale aerodynamics and create mini cars to test streamlining on varying surfaces.
A 3D printer will give my students the opportunity to creatively solve problems in the classroom, the school, and even in the community. The ability to apply their math to a functional piece of science is learning they will remember forever.
