I have groups of special education students throughout the day who all have academic deficits and learning disorders such as reading comprehension, fluency, math calculations, and math reasoning. We are fortunate that our district has provided some wonderful online programs to help to improve on students' weak areas in reading and math. However, these kids are all country boys and girls, many of them not having access to computers at home. They are required to do the assignments but class time is limited and having to share classroom computers means some students do not get to work online that day, and without a computer at home they are often unable to complete assignments on time. Also, being able to work online assignments in the presence of the teacher is a huge benefit for these struggling students. So many of them want to learn and do well but with learning disabilities it is hard to overcome and do on their own. Collaborative learning is a great advantage we have in small groups.
