In my high school math classes, we use graphing calculators almost every day. They are an invaluable resource for students to learn functions.
I find that by adding this visual reference, it extends their knowledge by leaps and bounds. Even more so when they can manipulate the numbers and explore what happens. They tend to discover the patterns that are hiding in math and thus deepen their understanding.
I have tried many versions of graphing calculators. The ones I dream of for my classroom are the TI-84 Plus CE (with Python programming capability). Let me tell you how amazing they are!
First and foremost, they have COLOR screens. What an amazing feature! Graphs can come alive to them by being able to see the different colored equations and compare them. Each student able to manipulate the equations and just play around with them can lead to fantastic discussions and revelations!
These calculators can teach students techniques to knock the ACT, SAT, and all high stakes tests out of the park! There are many concepts that are time consuming to calculate. With the aid of this calculator, they can do a problem in a very short amount of time, which is vital for success.
The boring, but oh so important detail, is the fact that they have a charging station! I cannot tell you how much cost effective and convenient it will be! As of now, I replace batteries multiple times a year.
There is real value in having this resource. I want my students to have the very best and be competitive academically as they prepare for college and beyond.
Thank you for your consideration!
