My students come from a variety of backgrounds, making our classroom a diverse and energized environment. While I have a sizable class library, I have two goals every year: add quality/high interest books and add books that will allow my students to see themselves reflected in those books.
This year's collection of Texas Bluebonnet nominees meets both goals. There is a great selection, and I would like my students to read 10/20 for a semester long reading project in our fifth grade class this year. I have purchased seven myself, but we'd love to have the entire collection for our class! They will read the books independently but collaborate on a wide range of book reporting ideas to include writing, speaking, and listening skills, all very important literacy skills but especially to ESL students. From there, we will launch into the second semester project about identity, culture, and differences and what role books play in describing, explaining, and validating or not validating those concepts.
