My student patrons are resilient, ambitious, and curious. What’s more, many of them are raising their children to be the same. Our diverse student body is Hispanic, African American, Native American, Caucasian, and Asian American. Most of which (I.e. over 70%) are considered homeless according to the McKinney-Vento Act. About one- third of our population are pregnant or parenting students; and, their babies are cared for and educated at our school’s onsite daycare. Some of the mother’s have managed to have incredible careers after high school. I would like to believe that this can be somewhat attributed to the many non-traditional resources we offer them. Although we are an alternative school, the students still have to master the same standards, and meet all of the state mandated requirements in order to graduate. On top of all of that, they manage their time to attend vocational school and work entry level jobs.
