This will be the beginning of a Maker Space in our library.
We have an amazing room that is attached to the library called the Fireside Gallery, which will be the perfect place to house a creative space. It was originally built to be a reading room and has a fireplace and beautiful white wooden walls. The back wall is all glass and lets in an amazing amount of natural light. Just outside the windows is our Secret Garden, a tranquil walled garden and patio.
Right now the room houses a small part of the library book collection and hosts several art shows a year. The plan is to move the books into the main collection and install a maker space to bring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) concepts to our more than 1,100 students.
The goal is to provide the inspiration and needed supplies, then set them free to think outside the box and create hands-on projects that inspire them for the rest of their lives. Maker Spaces help foster lifelong creative learners and inspire kids to pursue careers in STEAM-related fields such as art and science.
