My students are 6th-8th graders with intellectual and emotional disabilities and autism in a 12:1:1 self-contained, alternately-assessed class in Brooklyn, NY. Over 90% of the school receives free lunch. Several of my students are English Language Learners. Academic abilities range from pre-K level to 5th grade in both reading and math.
My class is very socially high functioning and VERY energetic. As middle school students, they are keenly aware of peer opinions and enjoy working cooperatively. They are eager to learn and participate readily in class activities, especially those that allow for movement. They love jokes and stories and tracking their own progress.
