I have 18 lively five-year-olds in my classroom this year! Seven of my kinders are ESL students. I am learning Spanish as they are learning English. My eyes have been opened to what non-English speakers experience when they walk through our doors. As an added bonus, my non-ESL students are picking up a few Spanish words and phrases! Win, win! Wouldn't you say!
If you were to walk into my classroom right now, you might be taken aback by the scraps of paper on the floor, loose crayons and rogue glue stick caps. I just consider it proof of active and engaged students. I had to learn to let go of my need to keep everything neat and tidy. This year I am embracing the chaos! An administrator once told me that what teachers perceive as noise and messiness in the classroom is just part of the natural learning process for littles. So...for as long as they are excelling, I will overlook my scattered floors.
